Taking the Car out of Carbon

A sustainable future for the world has to reduce car usage, increase walking, biking and transit ridership. Correctly pricing carbon will be key to making this happen.

Department of Kewl 5: Straddling Bus

Like all other Department of Kewl posts, this one too is wild and crazy. But don’t tell the guy making the presentation. He thinks he will take one of these home. Passion like this pushes the transit envelope.

I happen to think that there is a fundamental flaw, this bus tries to adapt for pedestrians, a format (the highway) that is essentially designed for the car. So there are all sorts of unresolved threads like how do people safely make it to and from the bus stations? What is the landscape around the stations? Is it pedestrian-friendly or auto-centric. Then, of course, there are questions about what happens when there is a variance from standard. Like when there is an oversized vehicle that want to pass under the bus. Can it stand aside?

All this notwithstanding, its an interesting concept and a fun video. Including the auto-translator.
